Manuscript Critiques

My critique includes a careful reading of your submission (within specified guidelines), an assessment of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer, suggestions for improvement, an evaluation of the format for picture books and graded readers, and when appropriate, I include ideas for possible markets.

 In addition to my 28 children’s books, I have contributed to 11 books for adults, and have sold hundreds of articles, poems, and short stories to more than 50 different periodicals, including: Focus on the Family, Decision, Highlights for Children, Pockets, Clubhouse Jr., The Upper Room, The Quiet Hour, Bible Advocate, Power for Living, The Lookout, War Cry, Campus Life, and dozens of others. All of these credits, my 21 years experience in the writing industry, and the fact that I’ve participated in more than 70 writers conferences, give me the experience I need to help beginning and intermediate writers as they grow in their craft and knowledge of the world of publishing.

 I currently serve as the poetry editor for the Christian Communicator. I am the founding director of the Glorieta Christian Writers Conference in New Mexico (1997-2001), a former columnist for The Christian Communicator and the Cross & Quill, and a writing instructor for dozens of writers’ conferences and groups. These include the following: Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference, Florida Christian Writers Conference, Wrangling with Writing, Write to Publish, Write Canada, Montrose Christian Writers Conference, American Christian Writers Conferences, Colorado Christian Writers Conference, and many others.

Please specify the genre (fiction/nonfiction/beginning reader…) and the word count. If you intend the manuscript for children, please indicate your target age group.

 You may mail a hardcopy manuscript or you may send it by email as an attachment, featuring PAID CRITIQUE in the subject line. If you mail the manuscript, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with the appropriate return postage. Most often I return a critiqued manuscript within two weeks. However, during my peak conference and travel times, more time may be required.  Feel free to email me for a time estimate. , If it’s a book proposal, include a brief explanation of the genre, audience, and word count or page count.
